The Trouble with Creative Writing Programs | Prismatic Entanglements

Although this post specifically refers to creative writing programs, I think it’s worth reading for anyone who is in the university system.

Summary: With great academic programs comes great elitism.

There is a good principle that created order, light and man; and a bad principle that created chaos, darkness and woman.

Pythagoras (circa 582-507 B.C.)

Wow. Pythagoras was kind of a dick.

I don’t do this often, but I wanted to say a big thank you to the wonderful garbage disposal women, men & variations there upon who are emptying the bins in our area, even though it is a public holiday*.
I hope you are earning wonderful overtime & fabulous penalty rates.

* Not everybody celebrates Christmas. But in Australia, everyone gets a public holiday.

prussanic-miscellanea:

Okay, I’m late to the party, but I’d like to talk about the Amiibo Samus Aran model.

I had no idea that Nintendo had this in the works, but I saw it advertised when flicking through a catalogue this morning. I’m not going to lie, my first thought was "What the fuck have they done to Samus?!"

I decided to investigate a little further, so I began with Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR), as shown above. Various studies have shown that WHR is used as a measure of attractiveness in a potential mate.

The figure which gets bandied about most often is 0.7 (or, a waist measurement that is 70% the width of the hips). This was found to be the case in an American study, which centred on Indo-European participants (Singh & Young, 1995).

Predictably, this figure has been shown to vary between cultures, for example, one study at Northwest University, Xi’an, China showed that a WHR of 0.6 was reported as being most attractive (Dixson et al 2007), whilst studies in Cameroon & Tanzania revealed that a WHR of around 0.8 was most desirable (Marlow et al 2005; Marlow & Westman 2001; Dixson et al 2007*).

So with this in mind, I find myself asking WHO THE FUCK DECIDED TO MAKE SAMUS’ WHR 0.457??

I mean, a WHR of 0.457 is obscenely low. You could hardly fit a human skeleton in that armour suit, let alone an entire person! Just look at the damage done to the internal organs & lower ribs when tightlacing a corset!

Dickinson, Robert L. - American journal of obstetrics and diseases of woman and children 1911; page 1037

Just to put this in perspective, in the Winter Soldier poster which people went ape-shit over, Scarlett Johansson’s WHR was approximately 0.594!

Samus Aran is important. She was one of the first female protagonists in gaming. The original Metroid game was released in 1986. Granted, her introduction was rather Trojan Horse & obfuscative - One had to complete the original game in under 5 hours for Samus’ gender to be revealed, and even the instruction manual referred to her using male pronouns.

But in spite of this, I have to wonder, are we going backwards? In 1986, Nintendo released a game, with a female protagonist & who did not need a man to save her.

But we’re now in 2014. 28 years later, and we can’t even give Samus a realistic body figure! What does that say?

*Apologies, had to link to Wikipedia here, because none of the papers are publicly available.

Also, as Ales at the-tabularium pointed out:

WHY DOES SHE HAVE A FUCKING THIGH GAP?!

Today I tried to study for my Biomolecular Sciences exam, and wound up drawing a cell nucleus instead.

The orange is the nuclear membrane. Blue is the nucleoplasm.

The nucleolus is green and the chromosomes are red.

And all the purple squiggles are chromatin.

This has been today’s science fun fact! Now with 50% less science!

Disclamer : The locations of the nuclear features in this diagram are based on various shitty diagrams which I found on Google Images & in my lecture note. I cannot be held accountable for the scientific accuracy (or lack thereof) of these placements.

I may not have made mention of this before, but I really fucking hate this sort of default male shit.

A couple of weeks back I bought a new laptop, and this was stuck to the outside of the box.

I have to laugh - Microsoft must be getting blunt in their old age. It doesn’t read “Don’t pirate Microsoft Office.” Or “Please purchase official licences Microsoft products.”

No instead, it just demands “Buy Microsoft Office.” You know, after four & a half years using OpenOffice I was actually considering buying a student copy, but being told “Buy Microsoft Office” kinda gets my back up.

It’s the sort of thing to which I would reply “I DO WHAT I WANT FUCKERS!!”

How to Pester People at the Train Station

Okay, you’re standing outside a train station representing your favourite charity/religious organisation, and you find yourself thinking “How can I get people to support my cause without pissing them off?”
Well, here are some guide lines for doing just that.

DON’T
1) Don’t call your chosen victim “love”, ” sweetie”, “darlin’”. If you’re addressing someone like that, you’re probably a white middle aged male & your almost certainly addressing a female. As a female, who routinely catches public transport & has extensive experience with this sort of operation, I can tell you that addressing me as any of the above is a great way to put me on the defensive & discourage me from actually listening to you. It’s demeaning, patronising & infantilising.

2) Don’t stand right in front of the entrance to the station. Believe it or not, people usually congregate at public transport hubs because they have to go somewhere. If they’re walking towards the station with single minded determination, it’s because they have a train to catch. Trains do not wait for people & if you stop someone & they miss their train, it’s your fault & they will be pissed.

3) Don’t continue to pester someone, once they’ve rebuffed you. If you say “How are you?” And they say “Good thanks” without stopping they are not interested. If you’re offering them a sample & they say “I’m right thanks” without stopping, they are not interested. If they say “I have a train to catch” they are not interested.
Unless they specifically say something like “I’m interested, tell me more” or “so what does your organisation do?” or “how can I support your work?” They. Are. Not. Interested.
Learn how to respect the body language & verbal responses which mean “no.”

4) DO NOT, I REPEAT DO FUCKING NOT, MOVE IN BETWEEN A PERSON & THE STATION GATES/TICKET BARRIERS. If you make them feel trapped or forced into a situation they will not be interested. If someone agrees to support your organisation because they think it’s the easyest way to get you off their back, this is essentially coersion.
Either way, the person is NOT going to respond favourably to your organisation in the future. They will probably bad mouth you on the internet & to their friends, and you will have a poor word of mouth reputation. Your reap what you sow.

This has been a PSA by Prue the disgruntled commuter.

Nothing makes me happier than the fact that the Icelandic government will neither confirm nor deny the existence of elves.

Why fix (or break) what’s not broken?

Nor New Zealand and Taniwha, I believe.

Edit. Autocucumber strikes again. I write nor it says not. Screw you autocucumber.

IIRC the New Zealand government has occasionally moved/changed construction projects “to avoid disturbing a local taniwha”, so there’s that. ;)

I love that we do that.
'Can't put that road there.'
'Why not?'
'Taniwha won't like it.'
'There is no such thing as taniwha.'
'Yeah, you say that but we're not taking chances mmkay?'

Nothing wrong with being genre savvy. That’s only sensible.

I’m an atheist about damn near every kind of higher power imaginable, but I’m agnostic about taniwha.

The local iwi say you don’t build the road there or eat in that spot near the river? DON’T BUILD THE ROAD.
